Step one: allow the camera and pick a mode
Using cam chat starts with two small decisions and almost no setup. First, to go live you allow your camera and microphone. The browser shows a prompt near the top of the screen, which is really just your own device confirming you meant to turn the camera on. It is free to start, so getting this far costs nothing.
Second, before you are paired with anyone, you choose a mode: video, voice or text. Video is the default and puts you on camera; voice keeps it to audio; text is there for typing. This choice is made up front and the session runs in whatever you picked, so if you would rather not be on camera, choose voice or text now rather than trying to go dark once you are in a video call.
Step two: get matched and open your mouth first

There is also a camera button, and it is the one people misread. Tapping it lays a cover over your picture on both sides; it does not turn your camera off and it does not save data, because the video keeps streaming under the cover. The honest ways to be off camera are the mode you chose at the start or, on a phone, the rear lens. One thing the call screen does not have is a report or block button. Those live somewhere else, which is the next step.
Step four: staying in control
Your baseline control is the simplest one: you can skip or hang up at any moment, for free, with no explanation owed to anyone. That one-tap exit is the feature the whole format rests on, and it works every single time regardless of anything else.
To block or report a specific person, open their profile rather than looking on the call screen. Blocking asks you to confirm by name, and after it the person will not be matched to you again; if you change your mind, you can unblock from Settings, then General, then Blocked List. Reporting is a separate button that opens a short form where you pick a reason and can attach up to three photos as evidence, and reports are reviewed within twenty-four hours, with the fair warning that false reports can bring restrictions on your own account. Calls are never recorded, this is an 18+ format, and between the exit, the block and the report you have more control than the speed of it all suggests.
