Three modes, one decision, made before you match. It is a small choice that changes the entire character of the evening.
You choose before matching, not during
On the start screen you pick video, voice or text, and matching then runs in that mode. Video is the default and what most people come for, but the other two are not consolation prizes — they are genuinely different experiences.
The one thing to get right is that the choice is made up front. A call runs in the mode it started in, so it is worth spending a moment on the decision rather than treating it as a setting you can adjust later.

Video is the reason random chat exists. You see who you are talking to, you read their face, and you know within a second or two whether there is anything here. Nothing else compresses that judgement into so little time.
It also asks the most of you. You are on screen for the duration, and you will be skipped by people who decided in half a second — the same way you will skip others. That is the trade, and most people decide it is worth making.
Voice: the underrated one
Voice keeps the thing that actually makes live conversation work — real time, real reactions, a real person answering — while dropping the part people find exposing. No camera is involved at all.
It suits more situations than people expect: a room you would rather not show, a night when you do not feel like being looked at, or simply a preference for talking over being seen. It can also feel less rushed, because neither side is making a snap visual judgement in the first second.
Text: quiet and low-stakes
Text is the lowest-commitment way in. Nothing to grant, nothing to show, nothing to hear — useful on a crowded train, in a quiet flat, or when you want to see who is around without committing to a conversation.
It is also the slowest of the three, and that cuts both ways: fewer instant judgements, but also fewer of those moments where a stranger says something unexpected and the whole thing comes alive. If you have only ever used text, video mode is worth one evening of your time.
