Yes — but not the way most people assume, and the in-call camera button does not do what its icon suggests. Here is the accurate version.
A video call needs your camera. There is no way around that
If you pick video mode, you have to grant camera permission before the call can start. There is no setting that lets you join video matching with the camera switched off and watch other people while staying dark yourself.
That is a fairness rule as much as a technical one. A video match is two people on camera; a room where half the participants could watch anonymously would be a different, considerably worse product.
What the in-call camera button actually does
This is the part worth knowing. During a call there is a camera button, and pressing it does not stop your camera. It puts a cover over the video on both sides — your feed is masked rather than switched off, and the camera keeps capturing and sending as before.
Two practical consequences. It will not save you any data or battery, so do not use it as a way to cut your mobile usage. And it is a courtesy screen, not a privacy guarantee — if being genuinely off camera matters to you, use one of the two options below instead.
The two options that genuinely keep you off screen
The first, and the one most people want: choose text or voice mode before you match. Those modes do not use your camera at all. You pick the mode on the start screen before matching begins, so decide there rather than expecting to change your mind later — once a call has started, it stays in the mode it began in.
The second is for phones. Once you are in a video call, you can flip from the front camera to the back one, so what the other person sees is the room rather than your face. The flip appears once the call is running, not during the preview beforehand, and it is a phone feature — a laptop or desktop usually has a single camera with nothing to flip to.
If your device has no camera at all
Voice and text mode still work. A desktop with no webcam attached can use CamDiv perfectly well as long as you choose one of those two modes at the start — and voice mode gives you the parts of a live conversation that matter most, minus the video.
And if you do have a camera but it will not start when you expect it to, that is a different problem with different fixes: check that the browser has permission, that no other app has grabbed the camera, and that you are in a real browser tab rather than the mini browser inside a social app. Your mic has a genuine mute button on the call screen, incidentally — that one really does cut your own audio, unlike the camera cover.
